| Title : Landless peasants (MST), land reform and the Lula government : promise and mobilizations, failure and rupture (2003-2005) |
| Summary : the Movement of Landless Peasants (MST) has been one of the strongest supports toward the election of President Lula, who had committed himself to redistributing lands to a million peasant families. But this promise, however reduced by half in the government’s land reform scheme (PNRA), has not been kept. Today, the MST, subjected to growing public and private repression, in the context of a major political crisis, remains nevertheless the main pillar of popular social mobilization in Brazil. It endeavours to continue its involvement, but its "critical support" to Lula is fast coming to an end. |
